Carrier Clinic to Host Mental Health First Aid Trainin

(BELLE MEAD, NJ: August 18, 2017)  According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an estimated 43.6 million Americans ages 18 and up experience some form of mental illness and 20.2 million adults have a substance use disorder. Of these, 7.9 million people had both a mental disorder and substance use disorder.

To help the members of the community learn how to assist adults experiencing a crisis, a Mental Health First Aid Training will be held at Carrier Clinic on Saturday, October 21, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Carrier Clinic’s Mental Health First Aid Training is an eight-hour in-person training designed for anyone to learn about mental illness and addiction, including risk factors and warning signs. Participants learn a five-step action plan to help people who are living with a mental health challenge or experiencing a crisis.

The course will be held in Carrier Clinic’s Administrative Building Training Center, located at 252 County Road 601 in Belle Mead, NJ. The cost to attend is $25 (course value is $170), which includes meals and manual.

Under the guidance of Jacqueline Bienenstock, MSN, RN-BC, attendees will learn potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.

“I wish everyone could take a Mental Health First Aid Training class because it is so important to understand how to react when someone is in crisis,” said Bienenstock, who has served as the Unit Director for Carrier Clinic’s Psychiatric Acute Care Unit for six years and has worked with Carrier Clinic for 27 years. “Doing the right thing could actually mean the difference between life and death. And I don’t think many people think about mental illness in that way. This training is incredibly valuable for everyone and anyone in our community.”

In order to receive certificate, attendee must be present for the entire length of the course. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information or to register, visit CarrierClinic.org/Events/Mental-Health-First-Aid-Training/.
