Thursday November 15, 2018
10:00 AM

Hopewell Valley Senior Center, 395 Reading Street, Pennington.

As adults age, older adults may develop health conditions that can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that more than 80 percent of older patients took at least one prescription medication on a daily basis, with more than half of this population taking more than five medications or supplements daily. In recent years, doctors have increasingly prescribed medications that are commonly referred to as opioids. While prescription opioids can help alleviate chronic and debilitating pain, they can be misused, leading to addiction, injury and even death. Given the effects of aging on a person's health, it is essential that older adults take particular care when using these powerful drugs.

In this free one hour presentation, you will learn about the risks of prescription medications (opioids) such as Vicodin, Oxycontin or Codeine. You will also learn about alternatives to pain management including acupuncture, yoga, physical therapy, chiropractics, massage, meditation, etc. In addition, you will gain insights into prescription medication misuse, safe practices and proper disposal. Free giveaways will also be available. We are asking to please register for this program. Please call, Liz at 609-537-0257.

11:30 AM

Join the experiments! Learn which styles of cooking and eating keep you energetic, alert and content. It's probably the foods that also support stable blood sugar in your unique, highly individual body. Members will select menus from a range of eating styles for which there is reasonable evidence that they can normalize blood sugar when well matched to the needs of the eater. We'll try vegan, raw vegan, vegetarian, omnivore and ketogenic meals - and then you get to decide which are best for you.

Members will be asked to share favorite books on nutrition and wellness, participate in light homework like journaling specific experiments, or vetting instructional videos to share with the group. Food preparation takes place from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, eating and meeting takes place 12:30 to 1:30 pm; everyone helps with clean up. People with food intolerances must be there for food prep and to make sure only permitted foods go on their plates. Those who have not attended Suppers before should arrive at noon for a newcomer orientation. For more information, contact Dor.

Thursday November 15, 2018
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

After a loved one dies, the holidays can be a difficult time of year for those who are grieving. The spirit of the season can often be more overwhelming and stressful than exciting and festive. Recognizing this as a natural part of the grieving process, Hunterdon Hospice invites the community a special gathering: "Surviving the Holidays" on Thursday, November 15th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

The Bereavement team of Jennifer Kennedy LCSW, Karin Gruss LCSW, and Janet McCulloch, LCSW, will be joined by Pastor & Hunterdon Hospice Volunteer, Tom Jones. They will speak about the challenges, pain, and guilt associated with loss, and offer creative strategies to help navigate through the holiday season. Guests of the evening will have the opportunity to interact with presenters and other attendees to share their feelings and concerns.

If you are still missing someone special, still feel that empty space in your life, and need some support to survive the holidays, please join us on November 15 at the Hunterdon Regional Community Health Building, 215 Route 31 South, Flemington, NJ (next to Yesterday's Treasures Thrift Shop). There is no cost to attend this event and all are welcome. For more information, or to RSVP, please contact kkelleher@hhsnj.org or 908-788-2573. Walk in guests also welcome.
