August 07, 2012
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – ID Care, New Jersey’s largest infectious diseases medical group, is honored to announce that ID Care Nurse Practitioner Deborah Winters, APRN-BC, AACRN received the New Jersey State Award for Nurse Practitioner Advocate by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Ms. Winters accepted the award at the recent AANP 27th National Conference in Florida. The award recognizes a nurse practitioner who demonstrates excellence in practice, research, education, and community affairs.
Ms. Winters serves as the ID Care Clinical Training Specialist overseeing a grant through Columbia University – NY/NJ AIDS Education and Training Center while also serving as the Senior Nurse Advisor with I-TECH (International Training and Education Centers for Health) in Ethiopia, South Africa, and Malawi.
“I began working in Ethiopia nearly ten years ago and more recently going to South Africa and Malawi,” Ms. Winters said. “In Africa, the nurses run the clinics and they handle so much more than just HIV. Our training gives them the knowledge and confidence to treat these patients and it’s paid off in terms of lives saved. Now parents are surviving to take care of their children. It’s still a challenge but I’ve gained so much from my experience.”
As a clinical nurse mentor in third world countries, Ms. Winters has prepared hundreds of nurses to provide high quality care and helped to build and transition mentoring programs so they can be operated by local health care personnel.
Nurse Winters also provides training in HIV disease management and clinical mentoring to HIV care providers and auxiliary staff at clinics and community health centers in Middlesex, Hunterdon, and Somerset Counties. She also represents ID Care on HIV services planning committees in Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset Counties. On a regional and national level, she represents ID Care through the AIDS Education and Training Centers and has served as a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care for 25 years.
